Healthy Eating

Today, in science, we were learning about food groups.  We learned that we need to eat a balance, and variety of food.  The food groups we explored were:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • bread, rice, potatoes and pasta
  • eggs, beans, fish or meat
  • milk and dairy foods
  • food and drink that are high in fat and sugar

The children were able to tell me that most of our food should come from the first two groups.  Do you eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day?  Did you know that it is also important to eat lots of bread, other cereals and potatoes?

We found that we should eat 2 to 3 foods from the dairy group, and a similar amount of food from the protein group (pulses, beans, eggs, fish or meat).

We also learned that we only need to eat a very small amount of food that is high in sugar or fat.

We decided to make our own balanced meals, making sure that we included the correct amount of food types on our plates.  You could have fun doing the same online, by playing this game:
